When you make the decision to upgrade your phone systems, you’ll be investing in a solution that makes your hotel run more efficiently for both your employees and your guests. SIP trunking has pros and cons over analog trunking that you should consider, but one of the primary benefits in making the switch is the cost savings.
The Difference Between SIP Trunking and Analog Trunking
Put simply, an analog trunk is an old-fashioned copper wire that runs through your building and ends at a phone plugged into the wall. This system has been around more than a century, so it’s not particularly high-tech. Analog trunks must be connected to the Public Switched Telephone Network (PTSN) to function, but they’re stable and, in some cases, can even operate without power.
The downside of analog trunks is they’re inflexibility. They can’t be moved from one location to another and the number can’t be changed, so hotels need to have the exact right number of trunks. Adding new trunks requires an infrastructure upgrade to add new wires.
But the largest issue with analog trunking is the cost. A typical trunk costs $38 per month, and long distance — which is vital to many hotels — is much more expensive. Hoteliers pay for the total number of trunks installed, regardless of if they’re being used. This often leads to hotels overpaying on their monthly phone bill for trunks that aren’t being utilized.
Our SIP Trunking Cost Savings Analysis
Recently, Phonesuite Direct installed our new phone systems into nine hotels owned by a major hotel ownership group and management company. We started by working with the customers to identify and gather all invoices related to their voice and dial-tone services.
These hotels averaged 172 rooms and were geographically diverse, located all over the country. The properties themselves were also diverse, ranging from big-box hotels to limited service and luxury boutiques.
Our analysis found that each property was using a legacy, non-Phonesuite PBX to handle its calls, and all of them were using traditional T1 or PRI services along with copper analog trunks.
Through our analysis of each property, Phonesuite Direct created a customized package that would deliver superior voice quality and service, in addition to the high-tech features that VoIP phones can bring to any hotel. Despite the diverse age and type of PBX at these nine hotels, Phonesuite Direct determined that we could deliver replacement service to each property.
After installation, this group of properties saved a total every month of $4,500 per month — an average of $500 per hotel!
